Gareth Morgan Calls for Cat Ban In NZ – Twitter Calls For Man Ban On Gareth Morgan

cat ban in new zealand

24 hours after New Zealand Economist Gareth Morgan called for a ban on the common household moggy (see the story here) the story has gone viral, with many Twitter users calling for a ban on Mr Morgan. Gawker picked it up last night, pointing out that the ironically named advoCATe of the environment seems to have the very name of the animal he is trying to ban in his title.

Some of the highlights from the Twitterverse include:

With his own hashtag #catflap, it seems the story is going to stick around – for a few more days at least. While Twitter is mostly up in arms doing what Twitter does, there is some support for Mr Morgan. What are your thoughts on the ban?

You can alway rely on Twitter for emotional responses to a rational argument. Looking at the preservation of native species from a purely rational point of view (one that an economist would have) it makes perfect sense – Eliminate the largest threat to native birds to increase their chances of survival. Remember when it was legal to own a ferret in NZ before they were made illegal in 2002 for the same reason?

No one wants their moggy labeled as a killer, but the truth is some are. Dogs are less of a concern as they’re controlled more strictly, hence they’re further down the native-killer-pecking-order.

Have you guys seen The Rum Diary? You know that part where the guy from Thank You for Smoking wants to build a hotel on a tropical island so puts forward a plan detailing 10 hotels? Settling for one cat-like hotel will be a win/win situation.

Cudos to his Gareth’s gumption to tackle a very emotional issue in order to ride the free PR.

PS. I’m a cat lover. Dogs are way too needy.
