Micro-Sims available in August for Telecom Customers

Once upon a time, devices (usually mobile phones) ran on a CDMA network, then along came the SIM card which was available from Vodafone whilst Telecom still used the CDMA network. Eventually there were new devices like netbooks which also used a SIM-card to connect to a network so that it could also surf the web. Telecom after many years of playing catch-up released along with their new phone network XT a SIM-card which finally meant people could bring over their current phones to the new network. Aside from their other outage issues on XT, this option along with competitive prices on mobile broadband opened up a new sense of competition. Now, devices are calling for the new micro-SIM - with the latest smart-phones like the iPhone 4 or the devices like the iPad requiring them to access the 3G network. As Vodafone has an exclusive contract with Apple, the release of a micro-SIM expected with no hesitations but for owners of the iPhone who wish to upgrade but were on Telecom (or another network like 2degrees) there was a question of when they were going to release one also.  Telecom's spokesperson Paul Taylor announced today that as of early August, micro-SIM cards will be available to both individual and business customers due to the increase demand and that: “Our release of Micro-SIMs ensures that our customers can continue to use the country’s best mobile network on all current and future devices”.It seems pretty straightforward, the actual size of the metal area which comes in contact with the device doesn't actually change - just the amount of plastic, which holds it. I find myself fumbling around with the current sized ones - so it will be interesting to see what happens when micro-SIM cards become the norm. If you don't want to change your SIM card - you can always try to locate a SIM-card cutter, which works like a hole puncher only for SIM cards, not sure of the price or availability. Personally, I'd expect the phone networks to provide an exchange method for a nominal amount or even better for FREE.SIM CutterIf Expected or not, it is good to see that Telecom aren't going to wait untill there are more devices available in New Zealand which will require the micro-SIM. If you are currently a Telecom customer - does this little bit of news put your mind at ease? And for customers of other networks, will you consider switching over to Telecom for mobile broadband?
