@earlybird catches the worm

Recently Twitter has been working on creating more revenue making models - from advertising on the main site to promoted trends and even rumours of promoted individual tweets, with Twitter's increase in popularity it seems only right that someone gets to capitalise on its success. Earlier this week, Twitter announced it plans to join the online shopping market and jump the bandwagon through an newly formed account called @earlybird. Online deals has become increasingly popular - people searching for the best deal,  within New Zealand alone there is auction sites likes TradeMe and Sella.co.nz but there is also daily deals like 1-day and 3Deals.How does it work? @earlybird is a newly formed account which will tweet short-term deals on Twitter to those who follow them - thus opening an opportunity for Twitter to offer advertisers a chance for increased exposure. Although it was only released earlier this week, the @earlybird account already has just under 30,000 followers and only 3 updates. With advertisers offering a multitude of deals from apparel to events and of course gadgets, there is debate of how relevant the deals will be to the audience - Twitter Support blog suggested that deals could be filtered by categories, but in the long run they would have to be selective to ensure this.When it is officially released it will only be available in the US for logistical reasons but there is definitely potential for it to be internationally successful in the future. Sean Garrett a Twitter spokesman said that the first deal will appear soon and there was opportunities for deals to be specific cities and possibly countries later on. Currently, creation of the new account and linking it to a feed of deals will come at no real extra cost to Twitter - this means that if it doesn't succeed, no real fall out either. Similar to the Twitter account of Air New Zealand's Grab-a-seat campaign which releases deals throughout the day, it also sends out deals at the strike of midnight - it comes at no extra cost but it means people will know about the deal as soon as possible.If @earlybird becomes available in New Zealand, would you be interested?Let us know.
