Social Media NZ Weekly Wrap-up 1/08/2010

Vodafone's Missing iPhonesThe biggest news of the week was once again an iPhone story. Rumors started flowing on Thursday night that Vodafone would be cancelling its launch of iPhone 4s in New Zealand, after concerned netizens noticed a complete removal of all iPhone 4 information from the Vodafone website.Vodafone did go through with the launch, but due to a lack of handsets, only made them available to purchase on new contracts. The small number of handsets on launch day, and the lack of communications with customers have left a sour taste in the mouths of many Vodafone customers - and only time will tell how it will effect the overall landscape of the New Zealand telco market.Jailbreaking is Fair UseEarlier this week the Library of Congress in America made some radical changes to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) - one of which saw the legalizing of jailbreaking. This ruling will have a profound effect on the underground jailbroken app scene, potentially bringing a legitimate alternative app ecosystem for consumers tired of Apple's walled garden.
