Social Media NZ Weekly Wrap-Up 13/12/2010

The Social-Lite: Episode 4 from Social Media NZ on Vimeo.

2010 has been a year of incredible growth here at Social Media NZ. Back in August we officially launched Social Media NZ, planting our flag in the social media landscape, poised for impact. Since then, the team has grown exponentially and we're excited to announce three major projects that we're working on for next year.

  1. Our long-awaited consultancy services will be implemented
  2. We are working on a product to further engage the community who wants to learn social media in a deeper, more valuable way
  3. We'll be 'bringing the interactivity' with an expanded Social Media NZ video team: the social-lite video is only a taste of what is to come in 2011!

In summary: 2011 will be the year we disrupt the status quo and shake things up a bit. Excited? We sure are! Here are this week's top social media and technology happenings:* Facebook underwent another Facelift, and this time it was with the updated profile page.* Earlier this week Groupon turned down a huge offer from Google. What happens next? Are they really worth more than 6 billion dollars?* Julian Assange has landed himself in quite the predicament this week. The co-founder of WikiLeaks turned himself in to English authorities over his Swedish sexual escapades.* Google also released a look back at NZ's most searched terms of 2010.* We saw YouTube remove their video length limit, and only time will time whether this will be a good thing for the YouTube community.Product Review:* We had the opportunity to check out Microsoft's Office 2011 for Mac - Read our full review.Thought-provoking posts of the week:* This week Libbie Lee looked into the effects of WikiLeaks and how it has contributed to the world of increasingly-social-media-reliant journalism.* This week's guest post was from Greer McDonald, the social media editor of New Zealand's leading online news publication, Stuff.co.nz. Greer wrote about how Twitter is the must-have tool for both up-and-coming and seasoned journalists.News you may have missed this week:* One of Europe's biggest tech events - Leweb - took place, and you can watch all the recorded talks over on their YouTube channel.* The backlash from the WikiLeaks community over Julian Assange's arrest was huge, with the community organising a systematic online takedown of Mastercard, Visa and Paypal's websites, which caused some major issues for a few hours.* Google released the much-anticipated Google Chrome OS Netbook.Video of the week: This week's viral video shows a girl growing from birth to 10 years in just a minute and a half:You can connect with the lovely host of The Social-Lite Jill Clark on these platforms:Twitter@Clark_JillWebsite: JillClark.biz
