Social Media NZ Weekly Wrap-up: Google + creates Buzz and other news


Happy 4th of July to our American readers! Let’s get into this week’s top news – a little late today as we’ve been all hands on deck for the launch of our new consultants page. This week we saw the web buzzing about the soft launch of Google +, a project the team here at Social Media NZ are quite excited about. We had the change to take Google + for a spin with our own profile and it looks like the dev team have learned from their past experiences with Wave and Buzz – the user interface is cleaner, integrated features like “hang out” are interesting and actually usable, and the overall concept is more relevant to the current market. It’ll be interesting to watch where this one goes.

Facebook this week announced that next week they will announced something “awesome”. Slightly convoluted and suitably mysterious. We know it’s likely to include or involve an in-browser video chat service. As we reported a few months back, a developer found a line of code which reveals integrated video chat capabilities are already underway. The inside money is on Skype as the preferred service powering this new functionality.
